Loralea Carruthers Announces Re-Election for East Gwillimbury Ward 1

EAST GWILLIMBURY, ON - Ward 1 Councillor Loralea Carruthers has officially announced her candidacy for re-election to East Gwillimbury Council, pledging to continue delivering the experienced leadership, strong community advocacy, and proven results that residents have come to expect.

"Serving the residents of Ward 1 in East Gwillimbury has been one of the greatest privileges of my life," said Carruthers. "As our community continues to grow and evolve, we need experienced leadership at the Council table that understands both where we've come from and where we're going. My campaign is built on three simple principles: Experience, Commitment, and Results."

Carruthers brings decades of public service experience to the role, including service as a School Trustee, School Board Chair, and municipal Councillor. During her career, she has earned a reputation as a collaborative leader who listens to residents, works constructively with colleagues and delivers real solutions for the community.

"Experience matters. Commitment matters. Results matter."

Over the past term, Carruthers has been a strong advocate for fiscal accountability, public safety, sustainable growth, environmental responsibility, and investments in community infrastructure. She has helped support important projects that enhance quality of life while maintaining East Gwillimbury's position as one of York Region's most affordable municipalities.

"Our residents want a Council that focuses on results, not politics," said Carruthers. "I am proud of what we have accomplished together: expanding community amenities, investing in roads, trails, parks and emergency services, supporting the future hospital, and ensuring taxpayers receive value for every dollar spent." A detailed list of delivered results will be posted on the campaign website in the coming days.

Carruthers emphasized that while much has been achieved, there is still important work ahead.

"If we are mandated to grow, we need to continue advocating for development that is both attainable and sustainable, improving transportation networks and community safety, protecting our natural environment, and investing in the recreation and community services that families need. Most importantly, we need leaders who remain committed to serving residents, and with both experience and the ability to work as a team."

Throughout the campaign, Carruthers will be meeting with residents across Ward 1 to discuss their priorities and share her vision for the future of East Gwillimbury.

"My record speaks for itself," she said. "The results we've achieved together are not just accomplishments. They are promises kept. I am asking residents for the opportunity to continue building on that success and ensuring East Gwillimbury remains one of the best places in Ontario to live, work, and raise a family."

Biography:

Loralea Carruthers has represented constituents in East Gwillimbury since 2003, first as our Public School Board Trustee and since 2018, as Councillor for East Gwillimbury Ward One.

During the past two terms of Council, Carruthers served as Council Liaison to many Town committees, including Environment, Diversity and Inclusion, Youth Advisory, Library Board and Active Transportation and Trails.  She also acted as Chair to the Town’s Community Infrastructure and Environmental Services department and is currently Chair of Corporate Services. Loralea has also stepped up to serve as Acting Mayor on multiple occasions, providing steady leadership and support when called upon.

Prior to being elected to Council, Carruthers served as Chair of the York Region Public School Board, where she won a Human Rights Award for her leadership. She is also a former Vice-President of the Ontario Public School Boards' Association where she led provincial negotiations with education unions.

Loralea is an environmental and consumer activist, including having worked as a consumer advocate for new homeowners on the Tarion Home Warranty Board, serving as a Director and Chair of their Consumer Committee.  

Living in rural Holland Landing for over 30 years, Loralea has been actively involved in our community, volunteering in various capacities with many local organizations.  

Carruthers is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and French, and earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

As a trained Mediator, Carruthers has received an Executive Certificate in Conflict Management from University of Windsor Faculty of Law and became an approved member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario.

Loralea is a proud mom, grandma, and kitten foster mom as well as a trained silversmith.
